Today is the beginning of Black History Month, a time to celebrate the immeasurable contributions that Black people have made across our society. While we celebrate the leaders and progress of the past, this year has reminded us of how much work remains to achieve our mission of true equality.
I want to thank the members of our 大象传媒 Health Black Alliance Employee Resource Group for their work and for giving of their time and talents to develop several exciting events that will take place over the next month. A full list is available聽. In addition, 大象传媒 student members of the Student National Medical Association and White Coats 4 Black Lives have launched a campaign called 鈥淎ctions Speak Louder,鈥� which you can learn about聽.
On January 20, I watched in awe as Amanda Gorman recited her poem 鈥淭he Hill We Climb鈥� at President Biden鈥檚 inauguration. If you have not watched her delivery, or read the text,聽. This powerful passage in particular stuck with me:
We are striving to forge a union with purpose,
to compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and
conditions of man.
And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us,
but what stands before us.
What stands before us in this moment is a chance to make and shape history and to promote equity and inclusion for all. Let鈥檚 commit Amanda Gorman鈥檚 beautiful words to actions.
