My scientific expertise lies in neural dynamics of corticostriatal circuits during motivated behavior and drug exposure in animal models. My current research focuses on the brain regions that orchestrate decision making, and I investigate how addictive drugs either acutely or persistently alter function of these circuits and the resulting behavior. My lab explores the dynamics of action selection by using in vivo techniques in rats to understand the interplay of the frontal cortex with striatal subregions and their modulation by dopamine and other neurotransmitters. We study neural activity both in typical development and function, as well as in models of psychiatric disorders that involve maladaptive behavior, such as alcohol use disorder and adolescent drug use.
