Program Description:

The 大象传媒 Orthopaedic foot and ankle fellowship is a 1 year training program with two foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeons in the towns of Chapel Hill and Cary, North Carolina.聽聽The program is for individuals who have completed an orthopaedic surgery residency (MD or DO).聽聽The program has both private practice and university model components.聽Opportunities to perform basic science and clinical research are provided.聽聽聽Broad coverage of all aspects of foot and ankle, including total ankle arthroplasty, complex hindfoot reconstruction, trauma, bunions, diabetes, thin wire external fixation, MIS techniques, and foot and ankle arthroscopy. Curriculum incorporates weekly foot and ankle didactic and case/indications conferences and monthly journal club.聽聽Two attendings work with the foot and ankle fellow and one 大象传媒 Orthopaedics resident on the service.聽聽Fellow should plan to attend AOFAS Annual meeting and one other course of their choice.聽 Call and weekend responsibilities will be on the order of 1 weekend per month.聽聽Moonlighting can be arranged for those interested, although our priority for the fellow is time for education, research, and the amazing personal/family activities that North Carolina has to offer.

Clinical Experience:

The goal of the fellowship is to prepare our fellows to be excellent clinicians and surgeons in the expanding field of orthopaedic medicine with emphasis on injuries and surgery of the foot and ankle.

  • Broad coverage of all aspects of foot and ankle, including total ankle arthroplasty, complex hindfoot reconstruction, trauma, bunions, diabetes, thin wire external fixation, MIS techniques, and foot and ankle arthroscopy.
  • Average of two days outpatient clinic, two days of OR, one day of research per week.
  • Experience with 2-3 attendings for the 2021-2022 fellowship year (pending hires in 2020) for a variety of experience; estimate fellow experience of 500-600 operative cases for the year.
  • Learning coding and documentation specific for foot and ankle outpatient clinic and operating room.
  • Includes learning environment of both tertiary care center OR and outpatient private practice-style ambulatory surgery center.

Research Experience:

The fellows will be provided on average one day per week of protected research time. This day is dedicated to scholarly activity so that the fellow can accomplish meaningful research during the year. Research opportunities include clinical, biomechanical, policy, and public health topics related to foot and ankle pathophysiology and care
