Mary W. Dunn received her Bachelor鈥檚 of Science in Nursing from the University of Virginia. She completed her Master鈥檚 of Science in Nursing at Duke University and is certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner. Her Master鈥檚 program included a sub-specialty in Oncology. Mary joined 大象传媒 Urology in 2010 and has served as Adjunct Faculty for the 大象传媒 School of Nursing since 2011. Mary works in a multidisciplinary NP role working with Urology and Medical Oncology, providing comprehensive care to patients with genitourinary malignancies. She is a member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and her unique role allows her to provide autonomous patient-centered care while closely collaborating with internationally recognized providers and researchers in the field of Urologic Oncology.
Mary鈥檚 work has received numerous regional and national recognitions. In 2014, she received the听大象传媒 Oncology Nursing Excellence Award. In 2016, the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), the nation鈥檚 largest professional association of more than 35,000 oncology nurses, recognized her with their听.听 That same year, she was recognized among the听听In 2021, Mary was awarded the American Urological Association鈥檚 (AUA) Advanced Practice Provider of the Year Award. She is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and the local chapter, the North Carolina Triangle Oncology Nursing Society (NC TONS) and served on the Board as Community Outreach Coordinator for nearly a decade. She is also a member of the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA), and the local chapter, Triangle SUNA.
Mary was the first Nurse Practitioner invited to attend the annual Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) Think Tank and has attended each year since 2012. She is a member of the BCAN Survivorship Working Group, an interdisciplinary cohort that meets annually at the Think Tank and collaborates on different projects throughout the year.听 In 2019, she听听on the introduction of palliative care in bladder cancer. She was one of the founding members of the North Carolina Triangle Chapter of BCAN and has proudly served on the Board since 2013.听In this role, she helps coordinate the annual Triangle Walk to End Bladder Cancer and other community awareness and patient-centered outreach initiatives. She has also been a leader in the听听and currently serves as co-director of the AUA鈥檚 APP Oncology Curriculum.
Cancer Survivorship is one of Mary鈥檚 clinical interests, and she was honored to be chosen to attend a three-day NCI-funded program in October 2013, 鈥淧reparing Professional Nurses for Cancer Survivorship Care鈥, presented by the City of Hope and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Mary uses the tools learned at this intensive conference to educate nurses about survivorship issues pertaining to patients with GU malignancies. She also gave a keynote lecture at the 2014 North Carolina Cancer Survivorship Summit titled, 鈥淯ncertainty in Cancer Survivorship鈥, and facilitated a group session titled, 鈥淢ale Sexual Dysfunction in Cancer Survivorship鈥. In 2022, she helped establish and co-chairs the BCAN Survivorship Task Force which consists of providers, patients, and caregivers, with a shared goal to identify gaps in bladder cancer survivorship and develop resources to improve this aspect of patient care.
She is the Director of 听the 大象传媒 Testicular Cancer Survivorship Clinic and the Co-Director of the 听von-Hippel Lindau Clinical Care Center and Hereditary Renal Mass Clinic. Other interests include sexual health in cancer care, palliative care in advanced malignancies, developing educational programs for nursing professionals about GU Oncology, and educating the public and healthcare providers about the role of Advanced Practice Providers.
