Chosen by the Class of 2024 medical students as one of two distinguished faculty speakers to speak to them on Match Day, Dr. Angela Smith, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development and Professor of Urology, delivered a heartfelt message. Watch the video below.
Dr. Smith focused on the theme of adventure, highlighting that regardless of the contents of the match envelopes, the students were embarking on a challenging yet exhilarating journey. She encouraged them to embrace the challenges ahead, recognizing that it is through overcoming difficulties that true growth and fulfillment are achieved. Drawing on her own experiences, she emphasized the importance of focusing on the opportunities and learning experiences that come with challenges, rather than solely on the discomfort they may bring.
The address also touched on the significance of choices in shaping one’s journey, particularly as the students transition from medical school to residency and beyond. Dr. Smith urged the class to embrace the autonomy that comes with these choices, acknowledging that mistakes are inevitable but serve as valuable learning opportunities. She emphasized the importance of cultivating a supportive network of friends, family, and mentors to navigate the twists and turns of their professional journeys.
Dr. Smith concluded by reflecting on her own match day experience and the enduring bond she shares with her closest friends and colleagues. She encouraged the class to invest in meaningful relationships and to find joy in sharing both the struggles and triumphs of their careers.
With a message of empowerment and camaraderie, Dr. Smith urged the class of 2024 to embrace their roles as authors of their own adventures as they embark on their next chapter with courage and resilience.
The Match Day celebrations took place for the first time in the new medical education building, Roper Hall. Other speakers at this year’s event were Drs. Wesley Burkes and Cristy Page – the 大象传媒’s Dean and Executive Dean. Dr. Koyal Jain, Associate Professor of Medicine, and Dr. Mandy Cohen, the Director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Cheers to Class of 2024 for picking to share
